Minimum DVS gateway deployment in DVS-based overlay streaming

چکیده
DVS (Distributed Video Streaming) is an edge streaming architecture for providing smooth video delivery. It is to divide video among multiple streaming senders in order to effectively provide the required throughput. In P2P-based streaming, if some peers are connected with high speed physical link, it is highly probable that they receive the best quality streaming stably from an original source. On these peers, we can impose the role of DVS gateway, i.e., let them translate the original streaming to distributive form and relay to the other peers who cannot connect to the original source with enough bandwidth. In dedicated infrastructure-based streaming, DVS gateway may be recruited by a content delivery company as an infrastructure node, that is to say, this infrastructure node has enough bandwidth to receive the best quality streaming from the original source, and it thus able to relay the original streaming using the distributed streaming to usual subscribers. In this paper, we consider a minimum DVS gateway deployment problem in DVS-based overlay streaming with satisfying bandwidth requirement of every peer or subscriber. We also consider the mandatory diversity and limitations of DVS gateways’ streaming capacity. The mandatory diversity is beneficial to mitigate the degradation of quality when an available bandwidth decreases suddenly, and the streaming capacity of each DVS gateway may be limited and heterogeneous. Based on recent advances in modeling techniques in flow networks, we provide a mixed integer programming formulation of the minimum DVS gateway deployment problem, and show that this problem is NP-hard. Thus we propose Lagrangian Relaxation with reduction heuristic to obtain an approximated solution. Our theoretical simulation studies show that the results obtained by our method are close to the lower bound obtained using LP relaxation. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

متن کاملEnabling Real-Time Distributed Virtual Simulation over the Internet Using Host-Based Overlay Multicast
Many-to-many multicast transmission is an essential network capability for scalable distributed simulation. The many open issues that make network-layer multicast impractical over the Internet today are likely to continue to be insurmountable and to prevent deployment in a manner that will meet the Quality of Service (QoS) and many-to-many multicast needs of real-time distributed virtual simula...
متن کاملThe Design and Implementation of the DVS Based Dynamic Compiler for Power Reduction
Recent years, as the wide deployment of embedded and mobile devices, reducing the power consumption in order to extend the battery life become a major factor that a designer must consider when designing a new architecture. DVS is regarded as one of the most effective power reduction techniques. This paper focus on run-time compiler driven DVS for power reduction, especially two key design issue...
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation of the XMSF Overlay Multicast Prototype
Growing demand for use of Internet/Web-based services in large scale real-time distributed virtual simulation (RT-DVS) and other real-time applications is fueling extensive interest in overlay multicast protocols. These applications require many-to-many multicast services that are not available as an open Internet service today and are not likely to be offered as an Internet-wide service in the...
متن کاملDynamic Vision Sensors for Human Activity Recognition
Unlike conventional cameras which capture video at a fixed frame rate, Dynamic Vision Sensors (DVS) record only changes in pixel intensity values. The output of DVS is simply a stream of discrete ON/OFF events based on the polarity of change in its pixel values. DVS has many attractive features such as low power consumption, high temporal resolution, high dynamic range and less storage requirem...
